Happy new year everyone! It is time to ressurect this blog! So, fingers crossed, it will be filled with posts in 2017!
As this is the new year post, let's start with a little review of the hobby year 2016 (so I wont spend much time on the bad stuff). It started where I am now, at the cabin in the woods. I was preparing for the Norwegian Masters tournament for The Hobbit SBG, and a little project I was going to do with Andreas "the Norwegian Viking". I approched him about filming the Hobbit scenarios for Spillforening The Fellowship on YouTube. He thought that was a good idea, and said we should do it chronologically and start with Dimrill Dale. From there it kind of escalated.. And ended up containing every scenario written for The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings SBG, from the Last Alliance to the Scouring of the Shire. The SBG Grand Campaing was born and we launch a new video every Saturday, and will do so for about five years! By the end of 2016, we have done 42 videos.
A lot of the first months of 2016 was spent on painting miniatures for the SBG Grand Campaign. I did all the dwarves for Dimrill Dale, but that was pushed back till September.
First we had to do the Last Alliance and I painted up a little Numenor force for that. Including two conversions, other than just headswaps, which was new for me. To get Elendil mounted I hacked mounted King Ellesar and Elendil on foot on the middle. Then put Elenedil on the mounted model and sculpted a new cape for him. I then made a mounted Captain using mounted Boromir. A head swap, weapon swap and sculpt a Numenor chest on him. I then sculpted furtrim on the foot version to match the mounted. I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out! I fielded a 350 point Numenor army at Mini-Arcon, which awarded me the wooden spoon!
I started reading and watching Beasts of War in the spring, and that turned my interest to Bolt Action! Which in turn got me in contact with Tabletopbattle, a great YouTube channel and group in Moss, Norway. They hosted a tournament in May, and I got my self a US Army that I painted up in about a week. But only the infantry units, and all the gun barrels (metalparts) is still unfinished. The vehicles I got to borrow from Tabletopbattle. It was a blast, and such a good game. If I got to play Bolt Action before playing Warhammer 40k, I dont think I would have played 40k! Since that I've been doing stuff with and on Tabletopbattle semi-regularly, and hope to do even more in 2017!
For the summer I painted up the Khorne Bloodbound part of the Age of Sigmar starter set. We then did a how-to series for Age of Sigmar on both Tabletopbattle and Spillforeningen the Fellowship. Unfortunatly we have not been able to get more Age of Sigmar on film, but plan on doing so in 2017. I have the expansion army for it, primed and ready to be painted. I just gotta find the time for it!
Late-summer and fall I prepared for Ardacon! I didn't have many models to paint for it though, I decided to bring my Army of Thror do that as well. I converted Dwalin and Thorin on pony, and painted the Company versions of them, instead of their younger selves I used in January. It did not go to well though, I ended third to last..
There was an Chaos in Arda event on Friday, which was a lot of fun, and something I plan to bring to events in Norway! I fielded Beorn and Radagast on sleigh. They worked really well! And are absolutley gorgeous models!
On the Sunday there was a Doubles event. Andreas and I teamed up. Him with about 50 hobbits, and I had three models: Thranduil, Legolas and a Mirkwood Ranger captain. We did, or rather, Andreas did pretty good and we got ourselves a second place! Ardacon was a very good event, if you can I reccomend you go in 2017!
For the winter season I painted Gwaihir and two Great Eagles for the last batch of SBG Grand Campaing filming in 2016. I also painted a couple of Imperial Assault minis, in preparation for the first campaign I'm planning to play with my girlfriend and some other friends. We got a demo at Star Wars Celebration in London, and we had to get it (and thanks to Ant for storing all my stuff)! I painted Start Collecting! Skeleton Horde box for Age of Sigmar as well, might do more for that in 2017.
So the approximate total of painted miniatures in 2016 is about 200. Other than that I had a lot of models for different games primed and ready to paint, but not had time to get to. Which bring me to the next part of this post. My goals/plans/dreams/resolutions for 2017!
For 2017, I will try not to purchase any new miniatures, unless:
- Blood Bowl:
- Dwarf team
- New players for my Orcs
- New players for my Humans
- New releases for Relicblade
- Filling gaps to complete current armies:
- US Army, Bolt Action and Konflikt '47
- LRDG force for Bolt Action, due May 2017
- Age of Sigmar:
- Destruction, mainly Beastclaw Raiders
- Death, mainly Deathrattle
- Chaos, Khorne Bloodbound specifically
- Order, Duradin
- Silver Tower releases
- Warhammer 40'000:
- No purchases needed I hope!
- The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings:
- Potential new releases for armies I have
- Guild Ball:
- Masons, new releases
- Union team
- Enginer team
Now that is a long list, but I'll probably ending up buying new stuff, so why put too many limitations on myself? Now that is about the only plan I have for 2017, not buy too much! Save some money, and get my backlog shortened at the same time! I have enough models to last me some years!
The next project I have to finish is for the Tabletopbattle Bolt Action Tournament in May! It will be an LRDG force, and I think I have most of the miniatures for it already, just gotta get some paint on it!
The next thing should be ready around the same time, and that is a Survivors of Lake-town army for the SBG Grand Campaign.
In between there I want to complete a couple of Blood Bowl teams, my Masons for Guild Ball, and hopefully some Relicblade miniatures! Tall order, but we'll see what I can get done!
What did you get done in 2016, and what do you hope to get done in 2017?
